Coverage and other features vary among insurers, are subject to state regulations, and are not available in every state. While each car mover must provide a base level of coverage, some go above and beyond by offering extra insurance coverage. In most cases, you do not have to purchase extra coverage if you are moving your own car. If you are moving from a non-no-fault to a non-fault state, you will probably have to modify the insurance on the car.

In addition to changing car insurance policies, you will also most likely have to register your car in your new state. If the new state requires a higher level of insurance, you might have to consider changing car insurance companies and/or changing your policy to reflect state-specific requirements. Most likely, your homeowners insurance policy or car insurance policy offers only limited coverage for your belongings when they are carried by you in a personal car or rental vehicle. In most cases, your homeowners insurance coverage will cover your personal belongings in case they are broken while moving, either while traveling to an insured location from the property, or while moving there.

In many cases, your homeowners or renters insurance will cover the move. Call an insurance agent and find out whether a rental moving truck is covered under your personal vehicle policy. If a lawsuit would affect your car premiums, determine whether or not you would like to use your personal auto insurance to cover a rental truck. Whether or not your policy has coverage for a truck rental, you should consider getting an add-on policy.

Even if your car insurance policy has some coverage, you should know what your moving truck rental companies do with accidents. If you are renting a moving truck or van, consider purchasing the optional Collision Damage Waiver insurance coverage with your truck rental company. Check your homeowners insurance policy prior to moving to find out whether or not you are covered for damages or losses caused during the moving process by the professional moving company. If the moving truck carrying your belongings is involved in a crash, and your belongings are destroyed or damaged during this covered incident, you may be able to make a claim.

You do not want to be held financially liable for damages that you inflict on the moving truck or van, and the comprehensive and collision insurance on your car policy generally does not extend to oversized vehicles. If you own sentimentally valuable assets you cannot live without, the great coverage of the business does not mean a lot to you should these items be damaged. If your valuables are easy to replace with the purchase of a new one, or timely shipping is of paramount importance, then a company with excellent insurance options might matter to you.

If the amount provided by your homeowners insurer is not nearly enough to cover what you have in your unit, you might need to buy additional insurance with your storage company. Many insurance companies, including ASI, which is one of the Progressive Network Insurance companies that is part of the Progressive family, will offer some protection to your personal belongings while they are being moved out and stored in your storage unit.

Any insurance policy that you buy with us is guaranteed to cover your belongings better than any other coverage or appraisal you may buy directly from the moving company. Total Value Protection is NOT insurance, it is coverage a moving company would offer to you for a premium. This buy-in coverage is typically combined with Release Value Protection, in which a third-party insurance company will cover the difference between a release-value protection amount of 60 cents a pound and your replacement value.

Understand that some states prohibit moving companies from selling coverage to their customers, so you will need to be sure that your mover provides documentation for this policy, if it is offered through a third-party. Let your insurer know that you are planning to move, and ask if they cover your home items. Once you know that you are moving for sure, continue calling your auto insurer and telling them of your move.

You will not have the essential liability protections guaranteed by the moving company, so figure out how your homeowners, renters, or apartment insurers cover your belongings during transit. Whichever way you look at it, moving insurance may offer some security at a very stressful time. It is essential that you insure your moves, as even the most meticulous moving companies will run into unexpected circumstances, like a fire, car accident, theft, natural disaster, etc.

While most moves are trouble-free, accidents do occur, and certain items can get lost or damaged in transit. Damages and losses may occur in the course of your move, but any good moving company wants to make sure that you are happy with your services, including the way that they handle claims. Your moving company will probably try to have broken items repaired, replaced with similar products, or provide a cash settlement based on the items current retail value.

If the claims adjuster is not sure whether repairs are feasible on a specific item, he will usually tell your moving company they are suggesting a replacement instead of repairs, since this is probably a more practical option for satisfying your claims. Either way, a claims adjuster will be the one who will schedule an appointment with a local third-party repair company to come out to your house, examine damaged items, and assess repair costs, if any, or replacement costs. If loss or damage of items prevents you from living in the new home–for example, if your bed breaks, an important appliance does not function, or something else makes daily living more difficult–your moving company may sometimes be able to expedite the replacement of items pending a written request to file your claims.

Insurance issues are a part of the moving industry, so they are important to consider. Truck rental companies, on the other hand, provide insurance that protects not just the rental car, but the driver, passengers, and your freight, depending on what kind of insurance coverage you select.
